Bulgarian employers report a considerable increase in their hiring plans for Q2 2014

  • manpower-logoNearly one out of five Bulgarian employers report positive hiring plans for the second quarter of this year. Bulgaria’s Net Employment Outlook for the April-June period stands at +14%.
  • The Net Employment Outlook increases by a margin of 13 percentage points quarter-over-quarter and by 2 percentage points on a year-over-year basis. In 2013, the Net Employment Outlook for Q2 was +12%.
  • The most notable increase is in the Restaurants and Hotels sector. In Q1 2014 the outlook was -16%, while now it is +33%. This is an increase of 49 percentage points on a quarter-over-quarter basis. This sector is followed by the sectors of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services (+22%) and Transport, Storage and Communications (+19%). Employers in the sectors of Electricity, Gas and Water Supply (+2%) and Construction (+1%), report the most modest hiring plans.
  • Employers in the Rousse region report the strongest hiring intentions for Q2 2014 with a Net Employment Outlook of +19%, followed by Burgas (+15%), Plovdiv (+14%), Varna (+14%) and Sofia (+11%).

Sofia, March 11, 2014 – Bulgarian employers expect the hiring pace in the second quarter of 2014 to increase considerably with a Net Employment Outlook of +14%, which is a 13 percentage point increase compared to the previous quarter, and 2 percentage points stronger on a year-over-year basis. Out of 750 employers who took part in the survey, 19 percent state that they intend to hire employees in the period from April to June, while only 5 percent report plans to reduce their staff. Employers in the Rousse region report the strongest hiring plans for the second quarter of 2014.

Employers in all five Bulgarian regions who took part in the survey report positive hiring intentions for the second quarter of 2014. The most optimistic ones are the employers in the region of Rousse, where the Net Employment Outlook is +19%. Employers in the regions of Plovdiv and Varna report identical Net Employment Outlooks of +14%. Employers in Burgas report hiring intentions for Q2 2014 to be +15%. Employers in Sofia region report the weakest hiring plans, but still promising enough, standing at +11%.

“This forecast is due to several projects taking place in these regions,” comments Nadia Vassileva, Managing Director of Manpower Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia. “In Varna, projects worth 1.1 billion leva are about to begin. They aim to transform Varna and develop the tourism and cultural potential of the city. The improvements will take place in several spheres, among which education and healthcare. These projects will open new vacancies that will provide employment,” says Nadia Vassileva.

She also adds that a new project which aims to fight youth unemployment in Varna is about to be launched. The project is named “Professional Qualification towards Stable Success in Tourism – Creation of New Vacancies at GVV”. The overall aim of the project is to create at least 30 jobs for people up to 29 years of age.

“The town of Rousse is planning to construct a railway that would travel through the city, instead of opening new bus routes. The aim of this project is to connect the railways that travel through Rousse to three industrial zones – Eastern Industrial Zone, Industrial Zone and Industrial Park. This could be the reason for the optimism of Rousse employers, along with the fact that the French producer of automobile parts Montupet plans to increase its employees from 700 to 900 people,” Nadia Vassileva explained.

According to the Managing Director of Manpower Bulgaria, Serbia and Croatia, these industrial zones have concentrated the biggest investments in Rousse, resulting in 3000 new jobs. This number is expected to increase because the region continues to attract new investors in addition to the existing ones’ expanding manufacturing activities. The construction of a new factory of the German company WITTE Automotive is underway and 600 new vacancies are expected to open.”

Comparative Net Employment Outlook by Sector

Employers in all 10 sectors surveyed report positive hiring intentions for the second quarter, with Outlooks improving in all sectors. The most notable changes are in the Restaurants and Hotels sector. The expectations for Q1 2014 were -16%, while now they stand at +33%. This is an increase of 49 percentage points on a quarter-over-quarter basis.

Other employers who report strong and positive hiring intentions are those in Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services, with a Net Employment Outlook of +22%, followed by Transport, Storage and Communications, with +19%. Employers reporting the weakest hiring intentions are in the Construction sector, with a Net Employment Outlook of +1%. However, this is an increase of 6 percentage points compared to the previous quarter, when the forecast was -5%.

Employers in the sector of Agriculture, Hunting, Forestry and Fishing report the next most optimistic plans for hiring (+17%), followed by those in Manufacturing (+14%) and Wholesale and Retail Trade (+11). Mining and Quarrying sector employers report a Net Employment Outlook of +10%, followed by those in Public and Social (+5%), Electricity, Gas and Water Supply (+2%) and Construction (+1%).

“The forecast in the sector of Restaurants and Hotels is due to the expected start of the summer holiday season, particularly in the regions of Burgas and Varna, where we see expectations of a brisk hiring pace in the next three months. Preparation for the summer begins in the first months and that is why hiring is expected to increase,” says Nadia Vassileva. “The positive and strong forecast in the sector of Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Business Services could be explained by the fact that employers are looking for candidates in the fields of finance and accounting. Also, there are more than 40 companies in the automotive industry, where specialists are also looked for. This is a good option for young people as they would receive good starting payment and obtain initial professional experience. Many projects in this industry are in a preparation stage and they will probably open numerous vacancies.”
